MMORPGs tend to be based on a very simple formula: time = progression. Most modern MMORPGs are not particularly challenging. They’re just time-consuming.

Yesterday Bioware posted a trailer for PvP in Star Wars: The Old Republic. They’re calling battlegrounds “war zones,” but other than that, it looks pretty similar in concept to battlegrounds in World of Warcraft, but with (arguably) better graphics and audio. It sure looks like gameplay footage, and while some of the animations look a little wonky, overall it looks promising.

My attitude toward this game continues to sway back and forth.

“The Foundry” offers player-created content for Star Trek Online

Borrowing a page from the Paragon Studios playbook, Cryptic will offer player-created content in Star Trek Online when their toolset, “The Foundry” is released. A beta version of the toolset will be available to all players in November.

For more information, check out the Eurogramer article or the FAQ from the Cryptic Star Trek Online forums.

I’m sure there are a lot of World of Warcraft players that would love to have this functionality, but it’s hard to imagine Blizzard giving up any control of the quality of the content in their game.
